Jesus Is Sad with You

A week or so ago, my toddler was really sad.  Katie was hungry and tired, but we had to wait for both lunch and nap until after the kids had their dentist appointment.  Katie was so brokenhearted when I started getting her ready to go instead of giving her what she wanted.  She was crying so hard- big sobs of complete broken heart.

Anna, four years old, came up and patted her on the back.  "Jesus is sad with you, Katie," she said.  Then she repeated it as she stepped away.  "Jesus is sad with you, Katie."  I don't know how much a 20 month old truly understands, but Katie calmed down.  (She didn't cheer up, but she calmed down.)

I have thought a lot about Anna's words since this happened.  Her knowledge of her Heavenly Father and her Savior may be basic, but she has an understanding of what the Atonement means. She may not know everything about it, and she may have to relearn this many times, but right now she knows what it means that Christ suffered in Gethsemane for her.

I think we'd all feel a lot more comfort and peace if we remembered the Atonement in this way.  Rather than trying to focus on all the ins and outs of all the doctrine surrounding it, we should simply try to remember that whatever we are feeling, Jesus feels with us.  Maybe we can feel some comfort knowing that there truly is someone out there who knows EXACTLY how we feel and has been there.  Maybe it will help even more knowing He went through it all out of love for us.

Just a thought.
